We are pleased to invite you to attend our tenth and final technical meeting for the 2011-2012 season, during which Dr. Nikolaos Kakalis, Head of Research & Innovation at Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Greece will speak on the subject of:

‘‘Model-Based Methods for Energy Efficiency Improvements on Board Ships’’

Shipping market volatility, energy prices, and existing / upcoming environmental regulations are all driving the maritime industry towards the adoption of more cost-effective and environmentally friendly operations and technologies. This has a significant impact on the entire machinery system of the ship, which is often pushed to the design limit, thereby imposing an increasing degree of sophistication and complexity. Computer-aided methodologies can successfully address the increasing complexity of integrated marine systems. To explore further the benefit, however, a shift of focus is required: from components to systems.
A class of systems engineering methodologies developed by DNV Research & Innovation will be presented and their computer implementations which can help manage the complexity of marine machinery systems. The proposed methods are able to cover many application areas such as performance assessment and optimisation, diagnostics, and techno-economic optimisation of marine systems as well as advanced technologies analysis focusing on fuel savings, emissions, reliability and safety. The potential from such approaches will be highlighted via illustrative case studies including the dynamic simulation of marine boilers and the techno-economic design optimisation of a waste heat recovery system.

Date and location for our meeting are:

Date : Thursday, June 14th, 2012
Time : 7.00 pm
Location : The auditorium of Maran Tankers Inc. (ex Kristen Navigation).
354 Syngrou Ave. (building before the Onassion Hospital)
Kallithea, Athens

After the meeting hors d’oeuvres, wine, soft drinks, etc. will be served.
The participation fee is 5 euros for members and students and 10 euros for non-members, which will be paid at the entrance prior to the start of the meeting.
We look forward to seeing you all at this last technical meeting for the 2011-2012 season. Have all a great summer!

We are pleased to invite you to attend our first technical meeting for the 2012-2013 season, during which Mr. Guilio Gennaro, Vice President at Studio di Ingegneria Navale e Meccanica, Genova, Italy will speak on the subject of:

‘‘Improving the Propulsion Efficiency by Means of Contracted and Loaded Tip (CLT) Propellers’’

To achieve a high propulsive efficiency is beneficial both from the environmental and the economic point of view. A large number of Propulsion Improvement Devices (PID) have been developed in the past and are routinely “reinvented”. On the contrary very few modifications have been proposed in the field of the propellers. Only tip propellers, most noticeably of CLT type, have been installed in relatively high number at full scale (about 300 vessels, from hydrofoils to bulk carriers, from Ro-Pax to VLCC) and have shown superior characteristics when compared to conventional propellers. Despite this fact, tip propellers are still unknown to most Ship Owners, Technical Managers and Shipyards. The author will present an overview of about 30 years of development of tip plate propellers and the latest experiences and R&D projects on CLT propellers.

Date and location for our meeting are:

Date : Thursday, September 13th, 2012
Time : 7.00 pm
Location : The auditorium of Maran Tankers Inc. (ex Kristen Navigation).
354 Syngrou Ave. (building before the Onassion Hospital)
Kallithea, Athens

After the meeting hors d’oeuvres, wine, soft drinks, etc. will be served.
The participation fee is 5 euros for members and students and 10 euros for non-members, which will be paid at the entrance prior to the start of the meeting.
We hope to see you on September 13th!

We are pleased to invite you to attend our second technical meeting for the 2012-2013 season, during which Mr. Jussi Pyörre, Vice President of Technology and Co-founder at ENIRAM Ltd., Finland will speak on the subject of:

“Challenges in Vessel Speed Optimization”

Speed optimization schemes face challenges in daily vessel operations due to very strict constraints imposed by itinerary and due to limited accuracy of available weather and sea current forecasts. Since fuel-optimal routing is highly sensitive to constraints such as just-in-time arrival, one high-speed leg can wipe out the accumulated savings of an entire voyage. We present an approach to optimal speed estimation which is based on statistical route forecasts based on historical data measured on specific routes. The optimization scheme includes penalties for specific unwanted operations, such as excessive acceleration, and rewards for required actions, such as consistent speed control. Simulation is used to provide alternative and improved energy efficient speed profiles. The results from this initial study are based on analysis of operational data collected from twenty vessels, modeling of environmental effects and simulation of optimal speed profiles, which suggest possible 3 ± 1 % energy savings.

Date and location for our meeting are:

Date : Thursday, October 18th, 2012
Time : 7.00 pm
Location : The auditorium of Maran Tankers Inc. (ex Kristen Navigation).
354 Syngrou Ave. (building before the Onassion Hospital)
Kallithea, Athens

After the meeting hors d’oeuvres, wine, soft drinks, etc. will be served.
The participation fee is 5 euros for members and students and 10 euros for non-members, which will be paid at the entrance prior to the start of the meeting.
We hope to see you on October 18th!

Very truly yours,
for the SNAME Greek Section

Apostolos Papanikolaou Petros Lalangas
Chairman Secretary / Treasurer

PS: Please note on your calendar that our next technical meeting will take place on December 13th, when Mr. Nicholas Kolliarakis of MIE Company Ltd, Greece will speak on the subject of “Engine Monitor: The Greek Answer to Engine Performance Monitoring”. There is no monthly technical meeting in November due to the 4th International Symposium organized by the Greek Section of SNAME. Please read details below.
